As per Motorola, it’s the segment’s first 5G smartphone with 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage, and a 50 MP OIS primary camera while the other highlights include a 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 7020 SoC, 6,000 mAh battery, Dolby stereo speakers, 33W TurboPower fast charging, and more. Phones phones everywhere but not a good phone in sight – that is how the affordable smartphone market looks like right now. There are tens of smartphones, all selling under Rs 20,000, in India. But all of them lack this thing or that, which makes most of them a compromise option.
Motorola G54 solves this question exceedingly well with the new Motorola G54 5G, which is now on sale in India with a starting price of Rs 15,999. This, in my opinion, is one of those phones that is easy to recommend.
Why? I will detail that in this review. Of course, the Motorola G54 is not perfect. But before we talk about that, some basics: The Motorola G54 is available in India in two variants.
The Motorola G54 5G costs Rs 15,999 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Whereas, the 12GB of RAM and 256GB variant is priced at Rs 18,999. It comes in Mint Green, Pearl Blue, and Midnight Blue color options.
Motorola G54 5G
Yes, Motorola G84 5G is worth buying but it’s not for everyone. As the phone doesn’t have a powerful processor and the best cameras. Still, for the price of Rs 15999, this is the perfect device for day-to-day usage.
The cameras are good but when it comes to low-light photography, it needs a lot of work. This has been a problem for Motorola for years and this is the right time to take cameras seriously.
The MediaTek Dimensity 7020 is a good SoC but it’s not powerful enough for heavy gaming. The LCD can be a deal breaker for some users too.
Motorola G54 5G could have been the best smartphone at Rs 14999. But at Rs 15999, it’s a bit extra because it doesn’t even have an AMOLED panel and even good cameras.
The 6.50-inch 120Hz LCD is solid, It’s not as good as AMOLED but the job is done. The screen brightness could have been a bit better. Sometimes, it gets hard to read the small text under the sunlight.
Now, it’s not like you won’t be able to read messages. Watch YouTube videos, or take video calls but this is a Rs 15999 smartphone. The Motorola could have provided a bright panel.
Also, as the phone has an LCD, there is no in-display fingerprint sensor. But yes, the side-mounted fingerprint sensor works well
The back and even frames are made from plastic. While the front is protected with Panda glass Motorola didn’t mention which version of Panda glass they used.
It has 192 grams of weight which is mind-blowing. The phone also has a massive 6,000mAh battery, so here, Motorola has done a fantastic job.
The front bottom chin is a bit extra. As this is a budget smartphone, can’t complain about the bezels.
Overall, Motorola could have provided the AMOLED panel but they didn’t while the screen brightness is a bit lower and the build is plastic is not a big issue for the price it comes.
Moving to the buttons, ports, connectivity, and audio, the right side offers volume controls and a power button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner while the left side has a dual 5G SIM tray that supports microSD card.
The bottom has a USB Type-C port, loudspeakers (stereo), a 3.5 mm jack, and a microphone whereas the top has another microphone and Dolby Atmos branding. The smartphone offers Dolby Audio support for audio enhancements and also stereo loudspeakers for louder and better sound.

Performance of Motorola G54
Mediatek Dimensity 7020 is not a powerful processor from any angle, it’s a balanced processor for day-to-day usage.
What this means is, don’t buy Motorola G54 5G for gaming at all, A little bit of gaming here and there is good but if you’re someone who plays games for hours then just stay away from this device.
The Moto G54 5G has 4,72,394 Antutu scores which is perfect for day-to-day usage.
By the way, the Motorola G54 5G is more powerful than the Motorola G84 5G priced at Rs 19,999.

Motorola has also added 11 5G bands in Motorola G54 5G which are n1, n3, n5, n7, n8, n20, n28, n38, n40, n41, n77, and n78. So if 5G is available in your city then you will be able to take full advantage of the 5G network.
The device runs on MyUX based on Android 13, it’s clean and ad-free software but the only problem is that Motorola has only promoted 1 year of OS updates and 3 years of security updates.
I feel this is the perfect smartphone for those users who want a clean Android experience and who are not into gaming much. The performance is not bad, but for power-hungry users, the Moto G54 5G is not the perfect phone.
Motorola G54 Camera
Cameras have been a weak part of Motorola devices and there is nothing new to say about Motorola G54 5G cameras, They’re not good and need lots of improvement.
I don’t know what Motorola is doing, Why can’t they just work on the camera side of things? Even their premium phone doesn’t have good cameras.
The Moto G54 5G comes with a 50MP primary sensor with OIS and an 8MP ultra-wide lens while there is a 16MP selfie shooter on the front. Both the front and rear cameras can shoot videos at 1080p@30fps.
I know, seeing OIS at Rs 15999 is a big deal but the reality is, the OIS doesn’t work well at all.
OIS’s job is to make video stable but in the case of Moto G54 5G, the videos with OIS look robotic. The videos don’t feel smooth from any angle at all.
The 50MP primary sensor is perfect when it comes to daylight photography. It’s not the best but for the price of Rs 15999, it’s not bad either.
For example, if you’re taking an image of your friend in normal mode then the skin tone will be a bit whiter, saturated, and a bit on the softer side. This is the perfect image for social media because you don’t have to edit the image at all, everything is done by sensors by default.
The 8MP ultra-wide lens is there only, It does take good images under good lights but when it comes to low lights, it adds a hell lot of noise and softness to the images.
The 16MP selfie shooter is perfect for social media as it provides whiter images, you can call it pre-added beauty mode.
The end story is, that the Motorola G54 5G doesn’t provide the best night images while the ultra-wide lens is not perfect but yes, the daylight images come out good for the price of Rs 14999.

Audio and Battery
The single speaker is not a good option at any price range. And when the phone is priced at Rs 15999, it’s the worst thing.
The single speaker on Moto G54 5G is doing a perfect job. It’s not the best when we see the price tag. It does have two mics and even carrier aggregation, so there is nothing to worry about calling at all.
The 6,000mAh battery lasts for days without any problem. While the 33W charging is not faster it gets the job done.
So, If your smartphone owns you then the 6000mAh battery is perfect. You will easily get two days of battery life depending on how you use the phone.
The phone supports a microSD card. You can either use two SIM cards or one SIM and one micro-SD Card. Motorola G54 5G has a hybrid SIM slot.
Software, User Interface
The Moto G54 5G runs on Android 13 with a near-stock interface means you get a clean Android experience with very few pre-installed apps (Facebook, FM Radio, Dolby Atmos, Moto Additions such as Moto Gestures, Moto Secure, ThinkShield for Mobile, Family Space). The company claims to offer an assured upgrade to Android 14 along with 3 years of security upgrades.
The Moto additions give you the power to take control of the Moto G54 5G. You can customize the interface, personalize the home screen, use gestures, and manage privacy, You get more features and perks in addition to all the native features of Android 13. The Android 13 operating system comes with a security patch dated 1st August 2023.
You get various Moto gestures including Quick Launch, Quick Capture, Fast Torch, Swipe to Split, Lift to Unlock, Flip for Do Not Disturb, and Side Bar which allows you to open a mini window of the app or task that you launch from the Side Bar.
Moto Secure to secure the phone as well as features like Family Space which is a separate space especially for Kids with limited apps to use. You also get stereo speakers and support for Dolby Atmos and Spatial Sound.
In our initial usage, the user interface is smooth in terms of performance, the 120 Hz refresh rate which adds to its responsiveness and smoothness. It delivers a smoother UI experience compared to smartphones with a standard 60 Hz or 90 Hz display in the segment.
Gaming
Moving to its gaming performance, the PowerVR’s IMG BXM-8-256 (8-core) is a new GPU and is categorized in the midrange segment GPU. It has a fairly good level of gaming performance so you can expect to run games on medium to high graphics settings. Compared to the counterpart ARM’s Mali-G57 MP2 (2-core), you can see there are 8 EUs (Execution Units) on the IMG BXM-8-256 compared to 2 EUs on the Mali-G57 MP2 and 259.2 Gflops vs 243.2 Gflops so, you can expect a slightly better performance in gaming. It may not be noticeable.

What the Motorola Moto G54 5G lacks in design and display chops, it makes up for in battery life and raw performance. At under ₹15,000, you also get a surprisingly good primary camera that clicks some stunning pictures in ideal lighting conditions. The 2-day-long battery life is one of the phone’s best features and 33 W of fast charging is serviceable for the price too. What disappointed me was the dull and dim IPS LCD.
The overall camera performance is impressive, We liked its camera features including the Spot Color for video, dual capture, and ultra-wide + macro modes.
In addition to that, you get a 120 Hz smooth display, a reasonably good CPU + GPU performance for the price, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, clean Android 13 with Moto gestures, a long-lasting battery (6,000 mAh), and gives you an option for larger 12 GB + 256 GB variant.
